While everyone's been blogging about the iPad and its impact on the e-reader/tablet industries, Apple has quietly lifted the VoIP restriction on its 3G network, an anticipated change for quite some time now before it was buried under other news. The first application to come out on the app store? Something called iCall, a free app that gives you three ways to pay for calls. You can sign up for free calls to the United States and Canada that require you to listen to an ad before your call is made, although the calls are limited to five minutes. There is also a pay-per-call plan, which gives you a deep discount from carrier prices. There is an all-you-can-talk $10 per month plan within the United States and Canada without having to hear ads. There is an additional fee for overseas calls, but at a lower per-minute price than with the pay-per-call plan. Another developer, Fring, has a similar application, but was apparently was released soon afterwards.
What this mean for Skype and Vonage? Skype said its 3G app was ready to go, but is waiting for Apple to clear things up with its Terms of Service. Apparently the issue surrounds the iPhone operating system being shared with the new iPad, which allows 3G, but the iPhone is still on an older version of the OS, and the TOS may not apply. As for this shaking up the industry, there are too many uncertainties with Apple's Terms of Service at this point that it's highly unlikely.
