The Mobile World Congress is coming around the corner and this year, the rumors aren't following the usual suspects - Apple, Google, Palm. Rather, this MWC seems to be centered around Microsoft and something called "Project Pink." Surprised? Same here. Yes, it has been that long since Microsoft has come out with anything newsworthy as time and time again have I noticed, or not, anything coming out from the MSFT camp.

That having been said, Microsoft is planning on shaking things up with Project Pink, the newest device that is rumored to be unveiled at this years MWC. Leaked by Gizmodo back in September, the devices resemble the sidekick devices by Danger, which was previously acquired by Microsoft. Though it is uncertain that these will become the project pink devices, the devices are rumored to run the Windows Mobile 7.0 OS and will carry similar specs to its Zune cousins, taking a book out of Apple with their iPods and iPhones. Hopefully they'll also take a design tip from Apple and give the new design a facelift that will give the devices a similar look and feel to the Zune.

So which will come first? Apparently CNET’s Ina Fried claims that Microsoft will be unveiling Windows Mobile 7. After Windows Mobile 7’s official debut, Microsoft is expected to provide developers who attend the at the Mix10 Conference in March with information necessary to begin development for Windows Mobile 7. An official launch date has not been determined, but Microsoft aims to finalize the code for Windows Mobile 7 by Summer 2010 with the intent of launching devices in the latter half of the year. Despite Microsoft being notorious for taking forever to roll out a product, my bet is that the devices may come out sooner, as a screenshot of the latest Zune update shows the integration of a "phone device."
